Shutters are a solid frame, holding within it horizontal or vertical panels that are referred to as louvers. These louvers can be fixed or operable, although in most cases operable is preferred for internal window coverings. Interior shutters usually hinge on either side of the window opening, and swing inwards to allow access to the window or to allow light to enter the room.
The rotating slats open and close to enable light control, visibility and airflow. Shutters are described using different terms such as traditional shutters, Californian shutters or Plantation shutters. Full height shutters can be made with a horizontal divider rail which separates the upper and lower portions of the shutter.
Basswood is a stable and reliable interior timber shutter, and is the most widely used material for shutters in the global market. There are other shutters available through Sophie’s Blinds including Fauxwood, Cedar and Aluminium.
